Lockdown Hunger – Covid-19 Relief

Our country is home to 25% of the world’s hungry population. The grave scenario painted by Covid-19 raised a nationwide alarm of food insecurity adding to the misery of the destitute. As an organization, few immediate resilient measures helped uplift many in their hopelessness. With our country being so diverse in food habits and availability, the meal packets and ration kits were customized to the regions where needs were prevalent. In the month of May our reach extended to remote pockets of Uttar Pradesh to few families in Sitapur that borders Nepal to down south reaching a tribal belt in the hill ranges in Nilgris (Coonoor) Few farmers in Haridwar expectantly looked to clouds for rain which would yield a harvest to feed their families… Close to harvest, heavy rains destroyed the paddy fields. Their only hope was destroyed. Only starvation was in store. The dry ration kit was blessing from heaven to those who starved hopelessly. So as many parts of the country received heavy rains, the Sunderban Islands were a victim once again to the nature’s fury. This time it was a double hit with Covid-19 driving them to loss of livelihood and the rains damaging their homes and belongings. The dry ration kit gave them a reason to hope for a better tomorrow. Few migrants who started their journey from Chennai all the way to Bihar and Assam were stopped by few NGO friends. They promised to supply the food during their stay. The ration kit to these migrants sustained them during these unprecedented times. Shekpura slum inhabitants, Police men & sanitation workers, passengers stranded near the railway station, street dwellers and the list goes on. ‘Share a MEAL’ program reached 1128 such individuals. These small meal packets filled with love and care refreshed exhausted migrants on their long journey. ‘Simple acts of kindness, no matter how small, can still mean a world to someone in desperation!!

Health is Wealth – Free Medical Camp in Shekpura

For the millions of Indians living in the slum, the first dawn of daylight each day, is a of day uncertainties than of hope. While the adults go for begging, the kids are left to wander around with no one to attend to their basic needs. With no aims or dreams, the youth spend their time in gambling or roaming in groups. Being deprived of basic infrastructure, sanitation, wholesome diet and awareness, makes them vulnerable for various epidemics and skin problems. Around 100-120 families have made Shekpura in Maliana, Meerut as their home. A majority of them are immigrants from neighbouring states who have come with a hope to find a living and feed the family. To reach out to their immediate health needs, a free Medical Camp was organised on the 26th of February. Dr.Ravindar, a General Practitioner along with a Dentist and a Naturopathy student rendered services to 130 plus adults and children who came for consultation. Minor ailments like flu and respiratory problems were the major complaints registered along with a few cases of skin infections and burns which were also treated with oral tablets and ointments. Vitamin A drops and Albendazole were administered to the children below five years. A short teaching on self-care, hygiene and handwashing was given to the children and mothers who had gathered.
